YMCA Cardiff has launched an innovative new initiative to provide e-Learning to those enrolled in its Aspire workplace readiness programme.

The programme seeks to help and support homeless residents in Cardiff in getting closer to the workplace by increasing their confidence, developing their skills and providing employability support and mental health awareness. The programme also matches Aspire participants with a local business for work placements and provides continued access to support throughout and after placement.

The charity operates in two distinct areas, youth and community and housing and homelessness. As well as supporting young people across Cardiff and the Vale, the charity also provides accommodation for nearly 120 homeless people (18+) in Cardiff with the belief that everyone should have a safe place to stay. Residents receive the support they need in order to achieve and sustain the transition into independent living and the workplace.

The addition of e-Learning, via the My Development Zone platform, will allow participants to access content online via any internet enabled device and access any of the platform’s 450+ bite-sized courses.

Commenting on the launch, Scott Brady, Aspire coordinator for YMCA, said: “With the wealth of course content available via My Development Zone, participants of YMCA Aspire will now have access to courses 24/7, empowering participants to self-study. It will also allow for development of their digital skills alongside furthering their employability and mental health awareness.

“My Development Zone will be a crucial element of the 4-week pre-placement training whereby participants will study online alongside existing successful provision. The e-Learning platform will allow expansion of their knowledge, honing potential and helping YMCA to continue supporting employment aspirations.”

My Development Zone is a product of the South Wales based business, RWA.  Jayne Skyrme, e-Learning development manager for RWA, went on to say, “We have had a lot of success with My Development Zone in the charity sector and are delighted that we are able to support YMCA’s mission in making a difference to the lives of those in need.

“My Development Zone platform is perfectly suited to supporting workplace learning programmes such as Aspire and we look forward to working with the YMCA to maximise the potential of the initiative.”
